Yamuna Zake, known for her foot yoga and body rolling techniques has partnered with Vogue to give readers arch exercises to spare their feet when wearing high heels. Zake believes that the stronger you make your foot; the longer heel wearers can withstand their shoes and avoid foot problems. After a night of wearing heels, the 60 year-old suggests using a tennis ball to roll your arches for five minutes to stretch and strengthen the foot. The rolling method may also reduce any swelling in the ankles. Other exercises include balancing the body’s weight on the outside edge of the foot, base of the toes, the heel and ball of the foot with shift the pressure amongst the muscles and tendons of the lower extremities. Zake also states that while wearing heels, stand with the feet parallel and equally distribute your weight to the outside edge of the feet. She emphasizes the importance of posture as well as putting the pressure on the outside edges of the feet rather than on the balls of the feet.

Exercise for Your Feet

Exercises
Toe rise – this exercise involves standing on the tip-toes for a count of 15 seconds, then resting your feet on ground. This exercise should be repeated three times a day to strengthen the feet. 


Toe Pick-ups – the toes are exercises that are done by picking up small items using your toes. This helps strengthen the muscles on the upper part of the feet. Three sets along with 15 seconds being held should be completed. Small items like marbles or stationary will work.


Ankle Pump – can be performed upwards or downwards. The workout can be completed both ways at the same time. This involves flexing the foot either towards the shin or to the ground. This makes the foot work very well, working large parts of the muscles.

High heels and other ill-fitting shoes could be a prime cause of Morton’s Neuroma. Neuroma affects the nerves located between the toes, creating a sensation similar to stabbing while walking. It is believed that neuroma stems from compression, injury or damage to the nerve. Therefore women who wear high heels or narrow-fitting shoes are at particular risk to developing the condition. The nerve repairs itself if left untreated, using fibrous tissues that create thickening and enlargement. The disorder is aggravated by irregularities that interfere with optimal foot function, such as high arches, overpronation, and hypermobility.


The disorder can be avoided by wearing shoes that are wide and deep in the toe area and that do not apply pressure to the metatarsals, or bones in the balls of your feet. Metatarsal support pads can also help by removing pressure from the nerve and promoting your foot’s natural anatomical position.

Morton’s Neuroma
Morton's neuroma is a painful foot condition that commonly affects the areas between the third and fourth toe and the ball of the foot, although other areas of the foot are also susceptible to this condition. According to new data from the United Kingdom’s National Health Service, about one hundred Scottish citizens have limbs amputated every month due to health conditions they developed as a result of being obese. The most common of these conditions are peripheral vascular disorder and type 2 diabetes, which can both be caused by the same lack of exercise and a healthy diet that cause people to become overweight.

These hand and foot amputations are costing the NHS about $82 million a year, way more than the public healthcare sector is able to afford. Those who lose limbs are also entitled to cost-of-living benefits, a $46 million annual expense for the government.

Acupuncture Can Help Mitigate Heel Pain

A study by Chinese scientists focused on acupuncture and how it serves to benefit people affected by painful foot and ankle conditions. The study found that acupuncture is a very effective treatment when it comes to addressing heel pain. This includes treating conditions of the heel such as plantar fasciitis or Achilles tendonitis.
The group of scientists used sixty-six patients that were dealing with ongoing heel pain. After a six month period, the scientists found that the patients that completed the acupuncture treatment gave it an effectiveness rating of 97% while those who only used drugs were only granted a 76% rating.

Causes of Heel Pain

● Heel pain is often associated with plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of tissues that extends along the bottom of the foot. A rip or tear in this ligament can cause inflammation of the tissue.

● Achilles tendonitis is another cause of heel pain. Inflammation of the Achilles tendon will cause pain from fractures and muscle tearing. Lack of flexibility is also another symptom.

● Heel spurs are another cause of pain. When the tissues of the plantar fascia undergo a great deal of stress, it can lead to ligament separation from the heel bone, causing heel spurs.

- Excessive running
